Florence is famous for its art in the form of paintings, sculptures and architecture. This post focuses on some of the statues. The most famous one they have is “David” by Michelangelo… which for some reason we can’t take photos of so they placed a replica outside so tourists can take as many pictures as they like. Florence has many churches, but one awesome cathedral called Santa Maria del Fiore. The dome is for me, the postcard image of Florence. One of my history books at school had a photo of the cathedral (with a view of the city behind it) that image forever stuck with me. I think I managed to recreate the same image above, but I haven’t seen that text book in many many years, for all I know… I could be mistaken and the cover might have been a painting and not actually a photograph! The main thing that caught my attention about cathedrals in Italy was that it wasn’t just one building, the belltower is usually a tower independent from the cathedral (the most famous being, the Leaning Tower of Pisa). This isn’t something I’ve seen before in the cathedrals I’ve visited in England, Spain and France. Fortunately, the bell towers are open to the public and offer good views of the cities in which they are in as well as the main cathedral itself from a height (see main photo).

One thing which was hard not to notice in Florence is that there are plenty of people who use a bicycle for transport, many of which were female.

I only spent 3 days in Florence, but about half of those featured some rain. Whilst it ruined the “postcard style” photos, it did give me a nice opportunity to catch a different atmosphere.
